Starting Up and Shutting Down OpenLinux

Getting Started Guide
1.
At the command prompt ($ or #) type kde and press Enter.
$ kde
After a few moments the Desktop appears as in Figure 35.
If the Desktop does not appear, check for the following:
•
A graphical screen appears, but it looks garbled (nothing like Figure 35)
or the mouse doesn’t seem to work correctly. (Press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace
to exit back to the character mode console.)
•
The screen goes blank for a moment, but then reappears in character mode
with an error message.
If either of these problems occurs, try running the XF86Setup program (as root
user) to adjust your graphical configuration, or review the technical support
information on page 8.
Exiting the Desktop
You can exit the Desktop environment by choosing Logout from the main menu
of the KDE Desktop.
To choose the Logout option:
1.
Click on the K icon in the lower left corner of the screen (on the
Panel).
The main menu appears.
2.
Choose Logout from the main menu.
A logout dialog box appears.
You can also choose the Logout item by right-clicking anywhere on the
KDE Desktop background and selecting Logout from the pop-up menu.
3.
Choose OK to close the graphical Desktop and return to the Linux
console (command line mode).
NOTE: If your system started with a graphical login, you
return to that login window. Otherwise, you change to a
character-mode command prompt.
